Foursquare to Integrate with Google

Now here is a startup that really knows what they’re doing and who to partner with.

Although a relatively new service, Foursquare already boasts over 8 million users worldwide. Sure, its nothing like Facebook’s half a billion users, but its already starting to raise a few eyebrows.

Its essentially a location based service thats taking off in a big way. You can “check in” to various places that you go to through your cell phone, which will update your friends regarding your whereabouts. The service makes a game out of this by allowing venue owners to give prizes to users with the most check ins. The fun aspect of the game is what has helped it take off the ground amidst literally thousands of other social networks sprouting up all over the place.

Foursquare announced recently that search engine results for venues may start having real-time integrated information. You could search for “Pepenero restaurant cape town” and Google will tell you how many people are at the restaurant at that moment, as well as the general buzz about the place.

This becomes an extremely powerful medium of conveying real time location based information, especially combined with other products such as Twitter’s Places (about location-based trending tweets).

As for the South African uptake of Foursquare so far? There are very few stats available at this stage, but taking a look at Foursquare’s automated Twitter posts from SA users can give you a rough idea!
