Seriously… Who Thinks SA is Ready for the World Cup?

I love the hype and excitement that is starting to build up to the 2010 soccer world cup. It is, after all, the greatest and biggest sporting event in the world.

I don’t think this country has ever splurged so much money on its infrastructure, and I love it! Bandwidth prices are going down, there are new developments everywhere and the roads are getting rebuilt and renovated. Brands all around the country are proclaiming their love for all things soccer and their support for our national team, Bafana Bafana.

Now, I don’t mean to be a cynical party stopper, but I honestly see no way we can finish everything that is being planned for the world cup. Sure, most of the soccer stadia are nearing completion, but many of the highway renovations are far from complete and have been in progress for years. We have less than 80 days to finish them. Peak hour traffic down the N1 is already unbearable, now imagine what an injection of a million tourists into Cape Town would do. The city’s roads will not be a happy place in a few months time.┬áMaybe my friend in the construction industry (Mark) will comment here and give his thoughts.

Now of course, there is the possibility that Germany will host the world cup in the event that we are unprepared. This would, however, cause a backlash so strong and so negative that Fifa would never OK such an idea. The soccer cup is going to be hosted here, whether we are ready for it or not. I’m just thinking of getting out of the country for a month while its happening – and I’m not alone on this one.

What do you guys think? Will SA be ready for 2010?
