Why You Really Aren’t that Great at “Social Media”


Social mediaAnd the guys I’m really talking to are the business decision makers who want to get on the new wave and “do social media”.

Social media is not a 1 click wonder, just as a loner going out one night to find a massive circle of friends is not going to be a 1 hit wonder.

You cannot suddenly jump into the fray and do social media, because either you are already connected, or you need to start from scratch and build yourself up. If your plan is to sign up for as many social websites as possible – the Facebooks and Twitters of the world – it won’t get you anywhere quickly unless you have something extremely viral.

Trust is what social media is all about – and that takes time. So if you do have a blog on your site with a small user base, then start from there. Start from the ground up, and make an actionable plan to nurture it and build readership and users over time. Make a plan with well defined goals on where you want to head, and make sure every passing day takes an incremental step toward that goal. Make sure you have metrics to measure by, tools to monitor your progress, and a step-by-step plan to make sure you’re on the right track.

Luckily, everyone started from scratch at one point and its definitely not too late to start getting into this social media thing.

    Isn’t there a saying that says – those who can do, those who can’t become “social media consultants” or “social media gurus”?

    There are many wannabe’s in the field of social media selling snake oil. But at the same time, there are legitmate people like Chris Brogan from New Marketing Labs who have delivered unfathomable value to companies.

    A company needs to always check references for a so-called social media expert before partnering with one for any period of time! A great SM guy can take a great company to the moon and further.
