Do you really know what you really know?

A strange title, I’ll admit.

But something struck me today while I was having a conversation with an engineer friend of mine. We were casually talking about the Internet and all the wonders its brought upon the world, when things became a little more technical.

We started discussing blogs, social media, web services and the like. And I came quick to realize that this really smart guy with a masters degree in engineering, didn’t have a strong grasp at all about the state of the web today.

So what does this mean? It means that I made a very interesting assumption – I assumed that pretty much all technically minded folks at least understand how social media, SEO and analytics work. I mean, its pretty ingrained in whatever we do online, but his eye’s glazed over when I started speaking of Google Analytics! Don’t get me wrong – he’s incredibly smart and can code up some of the best image processing algorithms I’ve ever seen, but when it comes to the web he’s not the brightest bulb in the bunch :P

So then, what’s my point?

I made an incredibly inaccurate assumption about how well I know something. In other words, I didn’t really know what I really knew about the web! And lucky for me, it is this exact niche that my business is accessing.

So, be careful with your assumptions about what you know and how well you know it – every one of you has a gem or two of knowledge that you may think is common place, but can eventually be turned into a million dollar niche idea.
